Dear VisitorF in February is for FishingYes, just one of the activities the West Coast has to offer! The natural deep, sheltered harbour of Saldanha Bay played an important part in the long and colourful history of this area and today still plays a central role in the export and import for the industries of the region, especially the iron ore industry. Saldanha, due to its sheltered harbour, provides excellent conditions for water sport and fishing enthusiasts. During the Second World War it was also extremely important because of its strategic location and safe anchorage as a convoy assembly point. Saldanha bay is the largest natural bay in South Africa and the town of Saldanha has developed as one of the major centres of the fishing industry. Fishing is popular in the open sea, but it is also conducted from harbour walls, rocky outcrops and protected beaches. The Saldanha Bay-Langebaan lagoon offers anglers a sublime angling opportunity on small boats within the bay and the lagoon. Likely catches here are galjoen, hottentot, shad (elf) and garrick (leervis)
For those who might be interested in doing a fishing charter, we can recommend the following: Schaafsma Charters - 1 hour boat trips to the mussel farms and Markus Island. 2-3 hours trips to Markus and the mussel farms, plus Jutten and Malgas Island. Full day trips and 2 day trips also available. Tel: 082-638-5723 Stratos Fishing Charters - Enjoy fishing in the bay and out at sea with light tackle for Cob, White Stump, Elf and Hottentot fish. Deep sea fishing is a real challenge as you take on Tuna and Yellow tail. Alternatively, book for early morning cray fishing trips (in the crayfish season).
